2011: A Cibu Year in Review

Happy (almost) New Year's! 2011 has been a huge year for Cibu. The products the line launched this year have been my favorite yet, and I'm so excited to see what's in store for Cibu for 2012. Here have been some of the highlights:

Early work days make it difficult to find that time to spruce up your hair, especially if you're like me and want every last minute of sleep you can get. My savior these past few weeks has been Origumi Creative Paste. I run it through wet hair and diffuse, or simply run it through dry hair for texture. It's such a fast way to tame unmanageable curls with minimal effort. It lasts all day... and repeat :).

Origumi is a flexible styling paste that is formulated with fibers for hold and ground mica for shine. What is Sulfate and Paraben-free, Anyway?

Whenever I post about a Cibu shampoo or conditioner, one key point I'll make is that most of Cibu's shampoos and conditioners are sulfate and paraben-free. But so? What does that even mean?!

Sulfates and parabens are ingredients used in skin and hair products that negatively affect our hair health, and possibly our overall health (though it's too early to tell). Sulfates are what create the sudsing agent in our hair and act as the detergent to get dirt and oil out. They can also cause tons of skin and hair problems, like irritations and rashes. Parabens are used as cosmetic preservatives. Both sulfates and parabens can be absorbed through the skin where they are able to damage our health. Cibu to the rescue!

Got 2 minutes? In a rush? Here's a quick style where you can spray and dash, while still looking like you put effort into your hair. Great for mornings when you just need to sleep in :). The dry shampoo is no longer available, but don't worry, this look still includes my personal favorite Cibu product--Pho Finish Workable Finishing Spray!

1) On dry hair, use any dry shampoo throughout to give it body
2) Brush through, twist sides, and pin them up
3) Spray finished look with Pho Finish Workable Finishing Spray for all-day hold

Cibu Loves the Friendly French Braid!

Time for a little blast from the past. The 80s meets Cibu, and this is what you get. :) It's a quick style, and will keep your hair out of your face but looking great all day. To do? Just this:

1) Brush dry hair out to make sure there aren't any knots. If there are? Miso Knotty Leave-In Detangler is your best friend.
2) Part hair to make sure the bangs are out and not part of the braid
3) Grab 3 strands from the center of the hair
4) Braid, and as you braid, pick up another strand of hair along the way. Don't forget to hold on tight with your hand--tightness is crucial to achieve this look! Do this all the way to the bottom.
5) Tie with a rubber band
6) Smooth sections with a brush
7) Spray throughout with Pho Finish Workable Finishing Spray for hold. It'll give it all-day hold, but won't crunch!
8) Spruce up the bottom with more than a rubberband :). A Cibu International pin, perhaps? Free with any Cibu order!

There's so much you can do with short hair--and having a long, fluffy ponytail is one of them! All you need is some dry shampoo and extensions. To do?

1) Brush dry shampoo through second or third day hair.
2) Use a small amount of Origumi Creative Paste emulsified on fingers and smooth all over, under, and around hair for pliability.
3) Put hair into a high ponytail.
4) Wrap around and clip 3 pieces of extensions in. Take the 4th piece and clip under and wrap around.
5) Pin up any pieces coming out the back.

This look may have taken the long route, but it was well worth it and it looks effortless and fresh! Who has to know? :) Here's the step-by-step...

1) Work Spring Roll Soft Curl Gel through damp hair. It's a light to medium hold, non-freezing gel that you can brush right through.
2) Take sections including bangs, twist into pincurls, and clip
3) Spray clipped hair with Pho Finish Workable Finishing Spray
4) Let hair sit until dry, or dry with a diffuser if you're tight on time
5) Take curls out, and if they're not curly enough, perfect it with a curling iron!

1) Brush out damp hair with a wide tooth comb

Cibu How-To: Curl Hair with Hot Rollers! (and optional updo)

When I went to go see which Cibu channel video had the most views, it happened to be the very first one! With over 100,000 views. Cibu vintage vid. Awesome. It's basically a tutorial on how to turn straight, flat hair into bouncy, curly hair using hot rollers and some key Cibu products. Here's the lowdown:

1) Wash hair with Shang High Volumizing Shampoo and Conditioner. They lift up the cuticle to give hair a thicker appearance.
2) Use a golf ball size serving of Shang High Volumizing Mousse and work through wet hair
3) Blowdry
4) Take some Origumi Creative Paste on your fingers, activate styling fibers, and work through sections of hair before rolling them in hot rollers. It's a pliable pomade that makes curls bouncy and pliable as they set, and gives it that "boingy" look. Do this throughout hair until all is rolled, including bangs.
5) Spray Pho Finish Workable Finishing Spray on rolled hair to set
6) Remove rollers
7) Backcomb hair at the root to add height

It's humid, and time to get that hair off your head! Here are two simple, easy to achieve updos to do just that. And you can watch the tutorial for both in under 10 minutes!

#1: Messy Redux
1) Use Miso Knotty Leave-In Detangler on second or third day hair to comb through and reactivate any styling products
2) Pin side sections back
3) Twist and pin up back of hair
4) Pin bangs up with a slight bump

Cibu Product Love: Tsu Shine Polishing Gloss!

Yesterday, I was in a friend's apartment and saw a couple bottles of Tsu Shine Polishing Gloss sitting on her dresser. It's a classic Cibu product, but I realized I haven't blogged about it much! So, this post is all about Tsu Shine :).

It's a glossy shine serum that adds definition and shine to all hair types. Comb one to two pumps through wet hair before blowdrying to add shine, control frizz, and use as a heat protectant. For dry hair, rub a small amount (it's concentrated) through hair to separate and define layers and work through frazzled ends as a damage concealer. Works great on all hair types but makes a particular difference in coarse, frizzy, dry, or damaged hair. You can also add it to any Cibu finishing product for extra shine. It's only $20 for a 4 oz bottle, and since you need such a small amount for each application, it lasts so long! I'm still on the same bottle I was on last summer. Well worth the price, and wonderful product! Give it a try.

I haven't done a look with the Deva hand diffuser in awhile, and found this awesome tutorial on Cibu's YouTube channel. It's a sexy faux bob wave, and is simple to do. It works on clean or unwashed hair! Here's the how-to:

1) Work a quarter size serving of Spring Roll Soft Curl Gel all over hair
2) Run 6 pumps of Mousse Lee Foaming Volumizer through ends
3) Diffuse hair on low speed, high heat
4) Use a 1" curling iron and wrap sections to amp up the curl
5) Twist bottom of hair under and pin it up
6) Work 1 drop of Ancient Serum Argan Oil Treatment through hair for shine

Cibu Do: Friday Foam Rollers

I know, I know. Another tutorial from Cibu's Do of the Holidays series--I'm just loving these looks. But this look in particular is incredible, and doesn't take very much time aside from leaving the foam rollers to set! It's the weekend, so if you have some time to relax at home and want to work gorgeous, vintage curls, I say go for it :) The video attached is the part 2 since the first part was just putting in the rollers. But if you want to see that part, you can watch it here!

1) With unwashed hair, use a rattail comb to section and roll sponge rollers (these are Conair) throughout entire head
2) Spray rolled hair with Pho Finish Workable Finishing Spray
3) Let sit for a few hours
4) Remove rollers to reveal tight curls
5) Work a drop of Ancient Serum Argan Oil Treatment through curls to add shine, eliminate frizz, and make curls look soft and believable
6) Work Origumi Creative Paste through hair to make it bouncy and pliable
7) Pin up sides with bobby pins

So, this look may be for Cibu's Do of the Holidays series, but I think it's just as cute of a look for this time of year, too. It's a twisty updo with mini Leia twists, and it's pretty quick!

1) On damp, unwashed hair, work Shang High Root Booster through the scalp, massaging in for volume and grip
2) Work a golf ball sized serving of Shang High Volumizing Mousse through midshaft to ends
3) Flashdry hair with blowdryer
4) On dry hair, put a small amount of Sticky Rice Pliable Pomade on your finger and work through hair to make the twists stick
5) Section 1 inch pieces around the head, backcomb, twist into a mini-bun, and pin up
6) Repeat throughout head, balancing sides so the look is symmetrical
7) Braid a front section on each side
8) Pin braids back as an accent
9) Spray finished look with Pho Finish Workable Finishing Spray to hold twists in place

Cibu Loves Cocktails at Tiffany's!

This look is an Audrey Hepburn, Breakfast at Tiffany's inspired do! It's pretty complex, but definitely an interesting and different style you can try out this weekend. It's basically a high updo with some curl work, and doesn't take very long to achieve considering how complex it looks! Here are the steps:

1) On unwashed hair, brush dry shampoo through
2) Section off the crown and tie the rest down, ignoring it for now
3) Section off parts of the crown, spray with Pho Finish (the video shows it using a different hairspray that has been discontinued... so Pho is a great replacement), and curl backwards with the curling iron
4) Once the crown is curled, remove the hair you tied back, spray with Pho Finish, and sculpt it upwards with a curling iron
5) Backcomb sections throughout, twist, and pin. Make it look somewhat balanced and deliberate, but there doesn't really have to be any rhyme or reason to which sections you pick.
6) If you have a cute hairpiece, throw that on too!

Cibu How-To: Swingin' Sixties Volume!

After hearing the latest news and practically jumping for joy, tomorrow will be an unusually wonderful Monday! (I know, wonderful and Monday in the same sentence.... what?) I'm thinking of going for a voluminous look with lots of height at the crown. Cibu Shang High is perfect for a look like this!

1) Wash hair with Shang High Shampoo and Conditioner
2) On damp hair, prep with Shang High Root Booster, working through with fingers
3) Work a golf-ball sized serving of Shang High Volumizing Mousse from mid-shaft to ends
4) Flash dry hair on high heat high speed, including upside-down
5) Wrap sections around Scunchi velcro rollers (no heat). Wrap in opposite directions so some hair flips out
6) Spray rolled hair with Pho Finish Workable Finishing Spray
7) Let rollers set for about 10 minutes
8) Remove rollers
9) Backcomb hair at the crown for added drama
10) Flip ends out with a flat iron
11) Take 2 sections at the top, twist up, bump, and pin
12) Spray finished look with Pho Finish

3) Leave rollers in for 10 minutes, then brush out to create a soft wave

Summer is almost here! And if you want to pretend it's summer and work a beachy wave look, try this one out. If you live somewhere warm and don't have to pretend, then I am extremely jealous :) This look works great on any hair length and gives it a textured appearance. Here are the steps:

1) On dry hair, coat with a volumizing spray. I used Shang High Root Booster for this :)
2) Work in Spring Roll Soft Curl Gel
3) Scrunch with hands and blowdry
4) Take bangs, twist them off of your face, and pin back
5) Hold with Pho Finish Workable Finishing Spray

Second day hair is the best... especially when it means you can ditch out on the blowdryer! That may very well be my least favorite part of hair styling, which is why any cute style that dodges that step is fine by me :)

1) Brush out second day hair with Miso Knotty Leave-In Detangler
2) Take a rat tail comb, comb out sections and roll hot rollers back
3) Spray Pho Finish Workable Finishing Spray all over rolled hair
4) Let sit for 10 minutes
5) Remove rollers
6) Use Sticky Rice Pomade to define waves
7) Finish with a C*Bump: Brush out front, separate, backcomb, twist, and pin!

Cibu How-To: Marilyn Monroe Inspired

The past couple days I've done the smooth and sleek look-- so I was ready to spice it up and do something different. I found this gem from Cibu's old do-a-days, and it's the definition of a spiced-up look: tight curls a la Marilyn Monroe! The steps are simple and the end result is one of the most unique and beautiful styles my hair has seen to date :)

1) Spray unwashed hair with Miso Knotty Leave-In Detangler and brush through
2) Beginning at the crown, prep sections with Pho Finish Workable Finishing Spray, and put some Sticky Rice Pomade on your fingertips to run through each section.
3) Roll hot rollers back (repeat steps 2 & 3 throughout all hair!)
4) Spray rolled hair with Pho Finish
5) Let rollers sit
6) Remove rollers, use a thin curling iron for each section and roll back to create tight curls. Repeat through hair.
7) If you have enough hair, you can pin it back for a faux bob
8) Faux mole optional :)

Cibu How-To: Flip Out!

It's time to whip out the hot rollers. Usually I use them for volume, but this look makes your hair more dimensional and flipped out. It's a pretty simple style that looks great with a springtime hair piece! Here are the steps:

1) On dry hair, spray Pho Finish Workable Finishing Spray throughout to give texture to hold the hot rollers. I know, I know, you have heard way too much about Pho Finish this week! It's that good. But I will change it up tomorrow. Promise.
2) Prep sections with Pho Finish and roll hot rollers in different directions throughout the top perimeter of the hair. This will make the hair look layered.
3) With the bottom perimeter of hair, twist rollers under (like usual)
4) Spray again with Pho Finish when all hair is rolled
5) Remove rollers
6) Backcomb
7) Add an accessory if you have one

This weekend, I'll be off to Hollywood. So, I am obviously going to have to spruce up my short-haired do... it's time to whip out the extensions and backcomb like there's no tomorrow. It's a high, voluminous bouffant phonytail. Jenn says it's perfect for Halloween, but in Hollywood, the more dramatic the better :) Here goes:

1) On unwashed hair, dry shampoo and brush through until the powder disappears.
2) Take the bottom half of hair and put it into a low ponytail. That hair will be used for the extensions.
3) Backcomb all hair except what's in the ponytail and any bangs. And by backcomb, I mean SERIOUSLY tease it! Aside from the extensions, this is the most important step to achieve this look!
4) Brush through and shape backcombed hair with Origumi Creative Paste, pinning the back and the sides
5) Add extensions
6) Pin hair into extensions to blend it
7) Spray with Pho Finish Workable FInishing Spray
8) Add a hairpiece

2) For texture, take 1 inch sections and tuck with twisty foam rollers

6) Pin back the sides with bobby pins

Cibu How-To: Half Down (with curls), Half Pin Up

I've been loving the curling iron lately! This look rocks tight, Shirley Temple-esque curls with a half-up bump. What does that translate to? Shorter styling time, but still elegant. Give this one a try!

1) On second day hair, spray Miso Knotty Leave-In Detangler to loosen knots and comb hair out
2) Spray dry shampoo throughout to remove oil and add some grip
3) Take top layer of hair and pin it up, with a bump at the top
4) Prep all loose hair with a light coating of Pho Finish Workable Finishing Spray
5) Curl loose hair with a 3/4 inch curling iron, alternating directions and adding tight curls
6) Remove bangs from the pinned hair and curl them
7) Using Origumi Creative Paste on fingers, scrunch through, then run fingers down the curls and bangs for definition. Origumi is great for curls to add some bounce!
8) Spray Pho Finish Workable Finishing Spray throughout finished look for hold

The sophisticated look in my previous post worked so well that I'm working another one tomorrow to make Monday less Monday-like: the low ballerina bun! In the video, Jenn uses extensions, but I just used my hair and it worked great. Here's what you'll need-- some Hi-Ya! Reconstructive Conditioner to lock in the shine, a comb, Wok This Way Sculpting Sauce (a medium hold gel... only $13!), Origumi Creative Paste, a blowdryer, some bobby pins, and hair extensions if you have them (and if your hair isn't long enough for a bun). Here are the steps:

1) Wash hair and condition with Hi-Ya! Reconstructive Conditioner, a deep conditioning treatment.
2) Work Wok This Way Sculpting Sauce through damp hair as the key styling product in this look. Comb through.
3) Make a deep side part.
4) Blowdry throughout.
5) Use Origumi Creative Paste on the hair that will be pinned up to help sculpt it.
6) Twist bottom of hair into a bun and secure with two bobby pins.
7) Add extensions if necessary and repeat twists.

1) On 2nd day hair, section off pieces

What can you do with a curling iron, Pho Finish Workable Finishing Spray, and Origumi Creative Paste? Turns out you can make a very 40s, very festive look that gives the illusion of flowers in your hair--even if the "flowers" are your hair itself :). It's a quick, vintage looking style. Here's how to achieve it:

1) On second day hair, use a curling iron to create tight curls all around. Make sure to spray with Pho Finish Workable Finishing Spray once sections are wrapped in the curling iron, and shape with hands once they're loose. (Spraying while it's rolled as opposed to before makes the curls more sculpted and defined)
2) Once all hair is curled, soften the crispiness with a brush
3) Take Origumi Creative Paste on fingertips and spread around one of the side curls
4) Twist that side curl into a knot and pin up on side of hair. This is the "flower" :)

Warm weather has finally arrived! And it's time to celebrate. What better way to kick off a great night than with great hair? I was feeling an updo, so I found this one and it is pretty simple to do. It even looks soft and voluminous before you pin it up. Here's what you do:

1) Prep 2nd day hair with dry shampoo, concentrating on roots to remove oil
2) Take sections and prep with Pho Finish Workable Finishing Spray
3) Roll hot rollers throughout all hair, including bangs
4) Spray rolled hair with Pho Finish Workable Finishing Spray
5) Remove each section, backcombing slightly
6) Using Origumi Creative Paste on fingertips, activate the styling fibers and work through hair
7) Twist hair in the back and pin it up.
8) Go celebrate. It's Friday!

Cibu How-To: Flat Iron Waves

Flat irons can do more than just straighten your hair... they can add gorgeous textured waves, too. This look will give your hair interest and amps up the softness and shine. There are a lot of steps, but once it's dry it moves pretty quick!

1) Wash hair with Shang High Volumizing Shampoo
2) Use a drop of Ancient Serum Argan Oil Treatment to add shine and softness before blowdrying and also to tame flyaways
3) Apply Shang High Root Booster all over scalp and massage throughout
4) Flash dry hair
5) Section off the top perimeter of the hair, pinning it out of the way
6) Lightly coat loose hair with Pho Finish Workable Finishing Spray-- an excellent product for heat and curl work! It is light enough of a coating that it won't be sticky but instead touchable throughout the day, and has just enough protection against heat so it won't damage hair
7) Take sections as wide as the flat iron and twist--working the wavy textured look
8) Do sections in different directions to add interest. The ends can even be straight to mix it up!
9) Once all hair has been twisted, take some Sticky Rice Pomade on your finger, emulsify until it disappears, and then scrunch it in
10) Spray hair with Pho Finish Workable Finishing Spray for hold

It's almost Valentine's Day! If any of you are going on a romantic date with your significant other and want a dramatic style, this one is for you. Sure, this one might take longer than most do-a-days, but completely worth it! And who doesn't love dressing up?

How-To:
1) Work dry shampoo through unwashed hair
2) Section off one side, while putting remainder of hair in rollers
3) Use Origumi Creative Paste to smooth and slick back the unrolled hair with a fine tooth comb
4) Pin loose hair behind ear
5) Remove rollers
6) Take more Origumi Creative Paste and use as a pomade to add texture to curls
7) Pin up loose hair in the back
8) Prep curls with Pho Finish Workable Finishing Spray and curl hair with 3/4 inch curling iron to create spiral curls
9) Tease back of hair to add body
10) Scrunch Origumi Creative Paste through curls to define
11) Spray finished look with Pho Finish for hold
12) Add a headpiece
13) Go somewhere nice to show off your do!

After watching so many do-a-days, I was finally inspired to chop my hair about 8 inches. It's never been above my shoulders before, and let me tell all you long haired girls out there-- chop it off! Sure, unwashed hair might be easier to style, but who says you can't create an awesome look with clean hair? This one I especially like. It's simple, uses very few products, and your hair just feels clean! Give it a try--

What you'll need:
*Origumi Creative Paste
*Pho Finish Workable Finishing Spray
*Rat tail comb
*Scunchi no-heat rollers

To-Do:
1) Brush out clean hair
2) Work Origumi through hair to add shine (through the ingredient ground mica)
3) Taking the rat tail tip of the comb, section and roll hair into rollers to add volume
4) Once all hair is in rollers, set with Pho Finish
5) Let sit, then remove rollers
6) Run through waves with Origumi
7) Spray finished look with Pho Finish

Here's what you'll need:
*Hot rollers
*Miso Knotty Leave-In Detangler
*Rat tail comb
*Pho Finish Workable Finishing Spray
*Sticky Rice Pliable Pomade
*Bobby pins

To-Do:
1) On unwashed hair, comb out knots with Miso Knotty Leave-In Detangler
2) Roll sections of hair into hot rollers
3) Spray rolled hair with Pho Finish Workable Finishing Spray
4) Let sit for 10 minutes
5) Remove rollers
6) Define waves with Sticky Rice
7) Do the C*Bump! Brush out the front, backcomb, twist, and secure with pins

If you have some time (and if you're being hit with snow like me, you might have time to spare!) try this pincurl look. It works on short or long hair and the results are awesome. Here's what you'll need:

*Spring Roll Soft Curl Gel
*Pho Finish Workable Finishing Spray
*Origumi Creative Paste
*Clips
*A diffuser
*A curling iron
*A brush

How-To:
1) Run Spring Roll Soft Curl Gel through damp hair. On fine to medium hair, don't discount gel to amp up the volume! Brush through.
2) Take sections, including bangs, and twist the hair. Pin it up, and repeat until all hair is pinned.
3) Spray with Pho Finish Workable Finishing Spray
4) Diffuse on high heat, low speed
5) Remove pins
6) Define curls with curling iron
7) Texturize with Origumi Creative Paste
8) Finish with Pho Finish

Let's face it- we're all pressed for time on Monday mornings! This look will take you around 10 minutes to achieve (a little longer with longer hair) and will add immense volume to your hair.

What you'll need?
*Shang High Volumizing Mousse
*Shang High Root Booster
*A blowdry brush (but really, you can do the same thing with a round brush and a blowdryer)
*Sticky Rice Pliable Pomade
*Pho Finish Workable Finishing Spray
*Bobby pins

To-Do?
1) On damp hair, work a ping pong ball sized serving of Shang High Volumizing Mousse through hair and massage Root Booster all around
2) Using a blowdry brush (or blowdryer + brush), give it some lift while drying

Many of us start New Years with the same vague resolutions-- work out, eat healthier, sleep more. Some of you might even get a haircut! This year, I'm going to do what Jenn recommended last New Years, and what I should have done in 2010... chop it off! It's a new year, so why not? Styling is more manageable, it's a fresher cut, and it's easier to amp up the volume. Like this!

Add Shine With Sashini, Cibu's Best Selling Product!

Do you have dry, damaged hair? Coarse hair? Ethnic hair? Hair desperate for shine? If any of that sounds all too familiar, Cibu Sashini Thermal Shine Solution may be exactly what you're looking for :).

Sashini is a highly concentrated solution of natural oils that adds shine, eliminates frizz, smoothes the hair, and serves as a heat protectant. It works great on all hair types in wet hair before blowdrying, and on more coarse, thick hair when it's dry. Use sparingly! It's very concentrated so it will last forever, and it has a fantastic scent. I really like using it when flat ironing to prevent the heat from damaging my hair.
